Agreement to these terms
These terms govern your use of the Lookt app and this website (together, the “Service”), operated by Lookt (“Lookt,” “we,” “us”). By downloading, installing, or using the Service, you agree to these terms. If you don’t agree, don’t use the Service.
What Lookt does
Lookt lets you scan a food item’s barcode and, optionally, its lot code and best-by date, and checks it against recall and outbreak notices published by the FDA, the USDA, and the CDC. With a free account, you can save items to a Pantry, and we’ll alert you if a saved item is recalled later.
Not affiliated with any government agency
Lookt is an independent product. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or operated by the FDA, the USDA, the CDC, or any other government agency. Any government seals or logos you see in the app belong to their respective agencies and appear only as source citations for the notices they publish.
No guarantee of safety
A “No recall found” result is not a guarantee that a food product is safe to eat. It means that, at the time of the check, we found no matching recall in the sources we checked. Recall information can be incomplete, delayed, or limited by what a source publishes — for example, some USDA meat and poultry recalls reach us only as a headline and summary, without a barcode or lot list. Always read and follow the official notice for any recall that may affect you, and always follow guidance from the FDA, the USDA, the CDC, or your own doctor over anything Lookt shows.
Accounts and your Pantry
Scanning items and browsing the recall feed require no account. Saving items to a Pantry requires signing in with Apple or Google. You must be 13 or older to create an account. You’re responsible for keeping your sign-in secure. You can delete your account and its data at any time — see Delete your account.
Payment
Lookt is a one-time paid purchase, made once through the App Store or Google Play. There is no subscription: nothing auto-renews, and no term of this agreement about renewal, recurring billing, or cancelling a subscription applies to Lookt. We don’t run ads, and we don’t offer subscriptions or in-app purchases. Store purchases are handled by Apple or Google under their own terms.
No user content
Lookt has no user uploads and no public content. You can’t post, publish, or share content with other users through the Service; your Pantry is private to your account.
Acceptable use
Don’t use the Service to violate the law, to interfere with its operation, or to try to access another user’s account or data.
Third-party sources
Recall and outbreak notices come from the FDA, the USDA (by email alert), and the CDC. Product names and photos come from Open Food Facts. We link to the official notice wherever we can; we don’t control, and aren’t responsible for, the content or availability of these third-party sources.
Disclaimer of warranties
The Service is provided “as is,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including that it will be accurate, complete, uninterrupted, or error-free.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Lookt is not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the Service, including any harm from relying on a result the Service gives you. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can’t be limited under applicable law.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. If we make a material change, we’ll update the effective date above and, where required, notify you in the app.
